call to action

In the wake of recent mass murders in Buffalo NY, Uvalde TX and elsewhere, and the daily toll of deaths by gunshot (approximately 125 persons every day) here are some ways you can get involved.

Call/write Sen. Portman to thank him and remind him . . .

Senate negotiators report that a deal has been reached and is near passage by the Senate. Sen. Portman has been among the 10 GOP senators involved in the negotiation and he supports the bill. Please thank him . . . and remind him of the other key step he can take to reduce gun violence - confirming the Director of the ATF (see below).

The main elements of the bill:
  • funding to states to create and administer Extreme Risk Protection Order ("Red Flag") laws;

  • "major investments to increase access to mental health and suicide prevention programs; and other support services available in the community, including crisis and trauma intervention and recovery";

  • eliminates the "boyfriend loophole" that currently allows those convicted of domestic violence to own guns if they were not married to, living with, or did not have a child with the abused partner;

  • an enhanced background check process for persons under 18 who attempt to buy a gun;

  • an expansion of the federal definition of a "firearms dealer" who is subject to federal regulations requiring background checks among other responsibilities;

  • funding "to help institute safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools."

Note that if this bill passes the Senate it will also need approval by the US House.

Call/write Sen. Portman and thank him for his support for the confirmation of Steve Dettelbach as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

On June 16 Portman joined GOP Sen. Susan Collins and 50 Democrats to move the nomination forward to a confirmation vote. Now we need Sen. Portman's vote to confirm Dettelbach.

  • Dettelbach has been nominated by Pres. Biden and has the support of Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown

  • The ATF has not had a permanent Director for 7 years!

  • Lack of a permanent director hampers the effectiveness of the ATF

  • Dettelbach was unanimously confirmed by the Senate as US Attorney for Northern Ohio and served for 6 1/2 years

  • Dettelbach has an excellent reputation and many endorsements (HERE)

  • Dettelbach is from OH
