Call/write Sen. Portman to thank him and remind him . . .
Senate negotiators report that a deal has been reached and is near passage by the Senate. Sen. Portman has been among the 10 GOP senators involved in the negotiation and he supports the bill. Please thank him . . . and remind him of the other key step he can take to reduce gun violence - confirming the Director of the ATF (see below).
The main elements of the bill:
funding to states to create and administer Extreme Risk Protection Order ("Red Flag") laws;
"major investments to increase access to mental health and suicide prevention programs; and other support services available in the community, including crisis and trauma intervention and recovery";
eliminates the "boyfriend loophole" that currently allows those convicted of domestic violence to own guns if they were not married to, living with, or did not have a child with the abused partner;
an enhanced background check process for persons under 18 who attempt to buy a gun;
an expansion of the federal definition of a "firearms dealer" who is subject to federal regulations requiring background checks among other responsibilities;
funding "to help institute safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools."
Note that if this bill passes the Senate it will also need approval by the US House.
